The Church of Haile Selassie I began its Prison Ministry in 1987, in the New York State Department of Corrections, as Chaplains, ministering to the affairs of incarcerated Rastafarians.

The Chaplains are members of the Clergy of the Church.

Ensuring that Rastafarians have and maintain their religous rights while being incarcerated.

​Such as right to wear locks, to eat only certain foods, to meet and worship, as well as the right to celebrate their Holy Days (May 5th, July 23rd, October 7, November 2nd

The Church has since left the New York DOC because of differences with the administration

The Church of Haile Selassie I has subsequently began another Prison Ministry in the State of New Jersey and Rikers Islsand.
